Eminent Nigerians, including President Goodluck Jonathan, Governor Ibikunle Amosun, former governor of Ogun State, Chief Gbenga Daniel and Senator Adegbenga Kaka, on Friday paid their last respect to the former President of the National Union of Nigerian Students (NUNS), Chief Segun Okeowo.
At the service held at Matthews’ Anglican Church, Simawa, in Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State, the president, represented by Comrade Jude Imagwe, his Senior Special Assistant on Youths and Students Matters, described the late student union leader as an icon of constructive activism in Nigeria.
The president said the news of Okeowo’s passage was received by the presidency with sadness and philosophical calmness, saying Okeowo’s death had deprived Nigeria of the priceless presence and service of an eminent commander of courage and virtue.
Daniel, in his tribute, described late Okeowo as a man of superior courage and principle, whose contributions in the liberation of the Nigerian students and youth were monumental.
Delivering his sermon at the church service, the Right Reverend (Dr) Micheal Olusina Fape, the Bishop of Remo Diocese, Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, described the deceased as a brave and courageous community leader, who brought the same energy into all his assignments as a school teacher, principal and Chairman, Ogun State Teaching Service Commission.
The cleric reminded the congregation that Christ’s death and resurrection had secured his or her own resurrection to etenal life and death.
