Ogun Hockey Team - Warn Lagos To Forget Gold

Hockey Players
Defending champions, Team Ogun, have issued a warning note to hosts, Team Lagos not to dream of winning the gold medal of the hockey event in the 2012 National Sports Festival slated for November this year.

Ogun State hockey male team defeated their counterparts from Rivers State 5-4 via penalty shootouts after one goal a piece at the regulation time to win gold medal of the event at the last Sports Festival held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Assistant coach of Ogun State’s hockey team, Seun Onakoya, boasted that they are coming to Lagos to defend their title.

“Our focus now is the zonal elimination contest. I am optimistic that we will qualify for the finals in Lagos to defend our title,” he said.

The former Lagos State’s hockey player said he is aware of the threat the hosts may pose to Ogun’s ambition, but noted that his team are fully ready for any opposition in the zonal elimination and the finals.

“My team are not afraid of Lagos and other states in the hockey event. Everybody saw what we did in the last National Sports Festival. So I am optimistic that we will make Ogun people proud by retaining our title in Lagos,” he said

On why he dumped Lagos for Ogun State, Onakoya said that Lagos did not recognise what he had achieved for the state in the previous sports festival.

“Ogun State approached me because of my achievements during my playing days for Lagos. I’m looking forward to the day Ogun will meet Lagos in a competitive match. That day will surely be a payback time for me,” he said.
