Dr. Mike Adenuga (Jr) is a native of Ijebu Igbo born in 1953 in the ancient Nigerian city of Ibadan, into the family of Chief Michael Agbolade Adenuga (Snr) and Madam Oyindamola Adenuga. He is an alumnus of the famous Ibadan Grammar School, in Oyo State Nigeria, North Western State University, Alva Oklahoma, and Pace University, New York, both in the United States of America.
Dr. Mike Adenuga (Jr) has at various times been described as visionary leader, an exemplary entrepreneur, and an outstanding manager of men and resources.
An encounter with Adenuga reveals a man of uncommon intellect who oversees a vast business empire with substantial investments in telecommunications, oil & gas, and
banking.
A man of abundant positive energy and immense personal drive, he has come a long way in life’s journey.
Adenuga was allocated oil blocks in 1990 by the Federal Government of Nigeria in a bold effort to encourage indigenous participation in crude oil exploration.
He attracted national attention in 1991 when his Consolidated Oil Limited became the first indigenous oil company to strike oil in commercial quantity and produce it. He consolidated his investment in the oil sector with the purchase of National Oil, and returned the moribund company to the path of profitability within a year of its acquisition. He eventually renamed the company Conoil Producing Limited, which is today the leading indigenous oil and gas exploration and producing company in Africa.
The downstream counterpart Conoil Plc is a leader of development in modern retail outlets such as mega stations and non space pumps.
In the field of telecommunications, Adenuga’s Globacom Limited is Nigeria’s Second National Carrier, providing services in mobile, fixed, broadband, and international gateway telephony. It launched services in Nigeria in 2005, in the Republic of Benin in 2008, and has continued its spread across West Africa with licences to operate in Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire, with more licences currently being prospected in other countries such as Togo and Senegal.
Adenuga’s Equitorial Trust Bank is a leading highly profitable post-consolidation mega bank in Nigeria, engaged in commercial and development oriented banking.
Beyond his businesses, Adenuga, through his companies and in his personal capacity, has changed the face of football on the continent.
The Adenuga Group sponsors the Glo-CAF Awards, an annual recognition of African stars featuring in top leagues all over the world; an event that elevates the best of African football to the world stage as players, coaches, administrators and clubs that ply their trade on the continent are celebrated.
Dr. Adenuga’s contributions to the development of the business terrain in Africa have been severally acknowledged. He was honoured by the Federal Republic of Nigeria with the National Award of the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) and later with the award of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
