Fayemi renewed call for SNC, enjoined media to remain resolute

ABEOKUTA – Governor of Ekiti state, Dr. Kayode Fayemi,  Wednesday in Abeokuta, Ogun state capital, renewed the call for a Sovereign National Conference (SNC),maitaining that,SNC would afford the country the opportunity for an all inclusive discussion on the nature and character of democracy.

He  however urged media practitioners  not to relent in their traditional role of defending the democracy in the country and  remain professionals in the cause of their duties.

Speaking on “Sustaining Democracy: the role of the media”.at the opening ceremony of  state Correspondents’  Chapel 2012 annual week held at Cultural centre,kuto,Abeokuta, Fayemi said for the betterment of  Nigeria,

The Governor, who was represented by  his Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Adewale Adeoye, said for the country to be stronger ,united  and virile,SNC should be accepted by all.

While paying tributes  to veteran journalists like lates Dr. Nnamdi Azikwe, Obafemi Awolowo, Ernest Okoli, Anthony Enahoro ,Fayemi said, their roles at liberating Nigeria from colonial rule  could not over empahasised.

He said “I cannot recollect any moment in Nigeria’s history, either in time of peace or war, during the struggle for Nigeria’s independence or the campaign to end military rule, that the media had not played very crucial roles”.

“In many instances, journalists have paid the supreme price of death for Nigeria to be free from one form of repression or the other. This illustrious role is inestimable”.

“We also have challenges with the electoral process even though remarkable achievements have been made. Nigerians have clearly seen the potential of the Judiciary in defending democratic principles.

“We must guide this trend and prevent the judiciary from being stifled by forces inimical to democracy and justice”.

He further tasked journalists to join force with the progressive elements who desired good for the betterment of the people in the country.

While declaring the press week opened, Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun state urged newsmen to join his administration in the mission to rebuild the state.

Amosun who was represented by the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Alhaji Yusuf Olaniyonu assured journalists to always seek clarification on any subject or rumour that are not cleared to them.

The governor stressed that the society, particularly Ogun state would be a better place for all to live and do business if newsmen in the state could partner his administration.
