Two men arraigned for rape in Abeokuta

Two men, Muyideen Jubril and Lanre Sofela, were on Wednesday arraigned before an Abeokuta Magistrate Court for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl in Abeokuta.

The men were accused of conspiring on November 8 at about 8.00 p.m. to rape the victim, an apprentice fashion designer. They face a two-count charge at the court for the crime; which if proven is punishable under the criminal code of Ogun State.

The counsel to the accused, Gani Ogunsawo, said his clients were tempted. He said the first accused and the victim were in a relationship before the incident, and were expected to get married later. He also said the second accused, Mr. Sofela, was only sent on an errand to call the victim and needs not be charged to court.

Mr. Ogunsawo said an out-of –court settlement was ongoing between the families of the victim and suspects.

He appealed to the judge to grant his clients bail arguing that the offence is bailable. He assured the court that the accused would not jump bail.

The judge, Martins Akinyemi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with one surety who must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction and must also present a sworn affidavit.

He adjourned the case to February 13, 2014.
