Ambassador Ashiru - Jonathan, Amosun, Orji mourn

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan has on Sunday said he received with much sadness, the news of the death of Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru, immediate past Minister of Foreign Affairs, who died at the age of 66 in a South Africa hospital after long battle with a brain related illness.

According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati, in Abuja on Sunday, Jonathan extended his condolences to Ambassador Ashiru’s wife, children, other relatives, friends, associates, former colleagues and staff of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs as they mourn “the exemplary diplomat, who gave the most productive years of his adult life to the patriotic service of his nation.”

He prayed that God Almighty will comfort all who mourn Ambassador Ashiru and grant his gentle soul peaceful and eternal rest.

Meanwhile, Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun has described the death Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru at the age of 66 years as very painful and a personal loss.

In a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mrs Olufunmilayo Wakama, Amosun described the death of Ashiru as a great loss to him, Ogun State, where he hailed from and the nation as a whole.

The governor noted that the death of Ashiru occurred at a time when his wealth of experience in international diplomacy would have been most needed in shoring up the nation’s image in the face of the insurgency that it is presently confronted with.

Also, Abia State Governor, Chief Theodore Orji, has expressed shock over the death of Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru.

Governor Orji in a press release by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Charles Ajunwa, described Ambassador Ashiru’s demise as a big loss to the country.
