The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps and the Federal Road Safety Corps are gearing up for the regular gridlock that usually characterises religious activities along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The agencies of the state and federal government have both mobilised 157 officials, while they have also deployed patrol vans and powerbikes in the ever-busy highway.
As the Redeemed Christian Church of God 2013 Annual Holy Ghost Congress began on Monday at the Redemption Camp along the expressway, traffic officials said they have deployed their personnel as well as patrol and towing vehicles in the corridor to curtail traffic snarl.
Millions of worshippers usually attend the yearly programme from all over the country and beyond, which increases the volume of traffic along the prime highway.
TRACE Corps Commandant, Mr. Ayo Sangofadeji, said the agency had increased the number of officers along the route and made arrangements for toll trucks to evacuate broken down vehicles.
“One of the problems is broken down vehicles. When there are such, the volume of traffic piles up behind such vehicles, leading to gridlock because motorists become impatient and want to take alternative routes, which unfortunately are not available,” Sangofadeji said.
With 57 officials of TRACE deployed in the area to manage the situation, Sangofadeji appealed to motorists to be patient even when traffic appeared to move slowly.
The FRSC Zonal Commanding Officer, Zone 2, Mr. Ademola Lawal, on Tuesday said the corps had mapped out plans to ensure free flow of traffic around the camp during the period.
Lawal, whose zone comprises Lagos andOgun, explained that about 100 officers, including Special Marshals and six patrol teams had been deployed to ensure free flow of traffic during the event.
The Assistant Corps Marshal urged motorists to cooperate with the FRSC officials by obeying traffic laws, but warned that offenders would be penalised.
