According to reports monitor online on Premium Times Online, a man in Ogijo, a 37-year-old Kayode Olubunmi, has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly flogging his cousin to death over a bowl of rice meant for the family dinner.
The incident happened at Ita Oluwo, Ogijo, Sagamu Local Government Area, at about 10:30 p.m. on Christmas Day, when the suspect returned home from a Christmas outing allegedly drunk.
PREMIUM TIMES learnt that the bowl of rice was given to the family by a neighbour. Before going out, Mr. Olubunmi instructed his 20-year-old cousin, Haruna Adeoye, to keep it intact, until his return, with the aim that they would eat it together as dinner.
However, on return from the christmas outing, Mr. Olubunmi who was already drunk, found the food already eaten. He picked a stick and repeatedly hit his orphaned cousin.
The beaten, however, turned sour, as the cousin suddenly collapsed and died thereafter.
The police from Ogijo Division subsequently arrested the suspect, and on conclusion of first round of investigation handed him over to the Eleweran Police Headquarters in Abeokuta.
The Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident; adding that the suspect already confessed to the crime.
He said the suspect had been detained by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, and would soon be charged to court.
“The suspect instructed the deceased not to eat the food before he arrived from an outing. On arrival from the outing, he decided to flog the deceased after he discovered that he had eaten the food,” Mr. Adejobi stated.
“It was a clear case because the suspect has confessed to the crime. I still want to appeal to people to control their temper and not get angry to the point of committing crime.
“This is a clear case because the man confessed he was drunk and lost control of himself, he flogged the boy to death and now it has become clear to him that he has commited a serious offence. Though the suspect has regretted his action, but it is too late”, Mr. Adejobi added
The police spokesperson said the police team from Ogijo led by the Divisional Police Officer, Toyin Afolaogun, had concluded their own preliminary investigation and transferred the case to the SCID in Abeokuta.
“We are still going to conduct a thorough investigation before the matter will be charged to court. The commissioner of police has ordered that the matter be thoroughly investigated and be charged to court,” he added.
The suspect while lamenting his action, told journalists that he could not explain why he killed his cousin.
“Actually I don’t know what really happened, I don’t know what came on me that day. Just exactly what I have said in the statement, I just don’t know how it happened,” he stated.
