OGUN State governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has assured that the Tongeji Island, in the Ipokia Local Government Area of the state would not go the way of Bakassi Peninsular.
Amosun gave the assurance while receiving the new Flag Officer, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Samuel Alade, in his office disclosing that that he had written the Presidency twice on the challenges facing the Island with a view to ensuring that the Island is not neglected and properly guarded. “We'll ensure, on our part as a government that Tongeji Island does not go the way of Bakassi. We shall continue to ensure the development of the area by making the people of the Island have a sense of belonging and happy,” he said.
He assured his visitor that his government would extend its five cardinal programmes to the Island, particularly in the areas of education and infrastructure.
Amosun congratulated Alade on his new appointment and charged him to ensure proper monitoring of the water fronts in the South-West.
Speaking earlier, Alade said he came to see the governor to brief him on his appointment and explained that Tongeji Island is very strategic not only to Ogun state, but also Nigeria as a whole, adding that all hands must be on deck to ensure that the Island is not encroached upon.
“There is need for more government presence on the Island in terms of adequate security and infrastructural development,” he stated.
