LP unsettling politics in Ogun and other southwest states.

From the below report taken from Tribune online, things are no loger at ease for both the APC and PDP in the Southwest. Please read on to find out why:
"AS the battle for the soul of South- West intensifies, Labour Party may have  overtaken Accord Party as a third force in the region, threatening the dominance of both the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) in the zone.

Insiders pointed at a discreet agenda some powerful elements within the Presidency to dilute and weaken the hold of APC in the South-West through Governor Segun Mimiko,a politician widely respected in Yorubaland in addition to the traditional structures of the PDP in the region.

Labour Party is reported to have promised the president’s caucus with a supporting platform in the struggle for Yoruba votes in the 2015 polls. It was said that since the core north did not vote for the president in 2011, denying the APC block votes in the South-West  is a smart way to ensure the president’s re- election.

Investigation across the zone indicated that Accord Party has lost its steam while the Labour Party is widening its presence in Ogun, Ekiti,Oyo and Osun states. In the countdown to 2015, checks showed that realignment of forces is increasing the base of the Labour Party with defectors coming mainly from the PDP and APC.

Another recent trend discovered in the course of this investigation is that chieftains of the APC in some Yoruba  states are also streaming into the party. Aside Hon Bamidele Opeyemi in Ekiti state, the party has also clinched a deal with a major faction of the APC in Ogun State. In Oyo State, APC insiders disclosed that some of their chieftains are working with some leading figures in the PDP to form a strong block through the Labour Party.

Former Governor Gbenga Daniel of Ogun State told the Sunday Tribune that in Ogun state today, LP is the arrowhead of a coalition of political leaders across the major parties. According to the former governor, a major faction of the APC, a major block of the PDP and the People’s Party of Nigeria are presently working under LP ahead of 2015 elections.

“We have a common agreement and consensus  to wrestle power from the APC in the state,” Daniel who is the leader of the party in the state, explained. The National Chairman of the party, Comrade Dan Nwanyanwu  who confirmed the agenda  posited that Daniel has the mandate of the national secretariat to lead a rainbow coalition against the APC in Ogun State.

In Oyo State, Sunday Tribune gathered that former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala is under pressure to adopt LP as a platform especially as it is unclear what exactly is the ambition of former Governor Radhidi Ladoja of Accord Party with whom Akala earlier forged an alliance.

Checks showed that a wing of APC in Oyo state is hitching to work with former  Governor Akala outside PDP whose structure is presently under the control of former senate leader,Senator Teslim Folarin. Labour Party is reportedly been proposed as a coalition point.

Further investigation in Ekiti revealed that a possible three-way battle among the trio of the incumbent Kayode Fayemi, Ayo Fayose and Opeyemi Bamidele may produce unexpected results at the forthcoming guber polls. It was learnt that unless the Oni/Adeyeye bloc support a Fyose candidature, protest vote may favour the labour candidate in the July poll.

A party source noted that Labour Party is hoping to reap from the discord and disaffection that may follow the holding of governorship primaries of the PDP in addition to the ongoing internal political bleeding within the ruling APC. According to the source,” PDP must achieve a reconciliation miracle after its primaries if Labour Party is not to reap and cruise to victory.”

Checks showed that Osun state is not left out of the growing entrenchment of the LP  in the zone with recent reports of defection in the state. The state chairman of the party in Osun state,Daniel Afilaka recently announced  that a chieftain and governorship aspirant of the PDP,Alhaji Fatai Akinbade had defected to the LP.

The leader of Labour Party,Governor Segun Mimiko had however publicly endorsed  a PDP aspirant, Iyiola Omisore for the governorship of Osun state even though  Akinbade who was the Secretary to state government under former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola has not confirmed his defection.

Findings showed that the widening hold of LP in the South West is linked to the 2015 presidential race, a contest in which the LP structure is believed to be working for the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan . Governor Mimiko,a close ally of the president is said to be actively supporting the spread of the LP as a counter - platform to feared APC continued domination of the South West.

Strengthening of LP is believed to be a major project of key loyalists of the president who are afraid  that the ongoing crisis in the zone may affect the PDP and President Jonathan’s  fortunes in the zone.

According to a South West politician privy to the agenda,”Jonathan winning re- election depends on South West votes. You can see more South Westerners are been appointed into critical agencies? You will see more of such high profile appointments in the next few months.

“But South West PDP is in crisis. The Obasanjo issue among others. So there is a need for friendly structures for vote Mobilisation during presidential election. So LP is PDP2,” the party chief said.
