Aderonke Ayokunnu, permanent secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, at a quarterly meeting with zonal social development officers in Abeokuta, the state capital, said that the planned family court was a veritable step to enhance family harmony.
Ayokunnu declared that the need to establish the court became compelling following the discovery in the increasing number of maintenance allowance being paid by fathers for the upkeep of their wards in the custody of their mothers across the state, saying it shown the increasing cases of divorce and separation among couples which deserved urgent attention.
The permanent secretary, however, challenged the zonal officers to research into the trend and join hands with the management of the ministry in order to set up the courts as soon as possible, saying “based on your various reports, it had shown that there exists a problem, and we all have to come together to find ways to curb it.”
She also advised the officers to establish networks with local government, community development officers for effective and proper dissemination of the present administration’s policies on social development, particularly at the grassroots.
