The Ogun State Police Command, on Monday last week, held a meeting with representatives of more than 40 communities and interest groups on how to effectively police the state.
A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who observed the meeting, reported that members of Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) from the 20 local government areas of the state were also in attendance.
Speaking at the occasion, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Ikemefuna Okoye, said that the meeting became imperative as the command was poised to serve the people of the state better.
``This meeting is to discuss grey areas in our relationship, and fashion out a way forward.
``It is also for you to tell us how we are doing, and if there is any area you want us to improve on; please feel free to let us know about it.
``Effective policing cannot be achieved without the collaboration of the citizens. You live among those suspects and we know how helpful your useful information can be,’’ he said.
Okoye assured participants at the meeting that more armoured personnel carrier (APC) would be deployed to strategic locations in not too distant future.
While stressing the need for all motorists in the state to have their vehicles registered, he encouraged participants to direct their complaints against any member of the police command to his office.
The Public Relations Officer of the Vigilance Service of Ogun, Mr Soji Ganzalo, who commended the command for being proactive, urged policemen to come out with a three-digit toll free number.
He expressed optimism that the number would make it easier for residents to reach the police command in times of emergency or crisis in their respective areas.
