The Ogun State Police Command has arraigned a suspect, Mr Oluwatoyin Omotosho, over allegations of fraudulently collecting money from residents under the state government's Homeowners' Charter Programme.
The accused was arraigned on a two count charge before Senior Magistrate Court 3, Isabo, Abeokuta, presided over by Senior Magistrate Martins Akinyemi on Thursday for fraudulently sending text messages to innocent applicants asking them to credit a private bank account to obtain their Certificate of Occupancy (C of O).
He was charged for conspiring with others at large on September 2, 2014 at about 10am to commit stealing contrary to and punishable under section 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
Omotosho was also alleged to have connived with others at large to fraudulently convert the sum of N62,000.00, property of the Ogun State Government, to his own use at a first generation bank, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 383 and punishable under Section 390(9) of Criminal Code of Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006.
The accused was granted bail in the sum N100, 000 with one surety, who must be a regular tax payer, in like sum, just as the case was adjourned to December 17 for hearing.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Mrs. Ajibola Chokor, while reacting to the development, said residents had earlier complained about the activities of fraudsters, commending the State Police Command for their prompt action in nabbing the suspect and charging him to court.
The Permanent Secretary said the Homeowners' Charter Programme is a direct programme between Ogun State Government and home owners in the State as no consultant or agent has any role in the collection of funds or the issuance of Certificate of Occupancy.
