Ogun Ex-political Appointees Protest Non-payment Of Severance Benefits

Twenty two former political appointees in Ogun State have died as a result of the non-payment of their severance allowances, their colleagues who served under the immediate past administration have claimed.

The political appointees who served under the platform of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said three years after service, they are yet to receive their severance package.

They blamed it on what they described as the nonchalance attitude of Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun.

Speaking on behalf of the protesting Former Political Officers’ Forum in Abeokuta, the Secretary, Jamiu Keshinro, said the severance allowance amounts to N2.9 billion.

Members of the forum say they served both in the local governments and at the state level between 2007 and 2011.

‪Mr. Keshinro said the governor only paid N300 million to 103 of the 750 officials.

He said Mr. Amosun reneged on his promise to pay the severance allowance.

“None of us has collected a dime since June,” said Mr. Keshinro.

‪”Because the governor has failed to fulfil his promise to us, we have no choice than to let the whole world know that we have not been paid,” Mr. Keshinro said.

‪”We are now using this medium to appeal to the governor to quickly come to our aid by paying us our severance allowance without further delay. Sadly enough, 22 of us are already dead due to one ailment or another and many are also sick,” he said.

Mr. Keshinro expressed concern that failure to pay the severance allowance before May 29, 2015 would make the situation worse as the list of the beneficiaries would increase and put more debt burden on the state.
