This year's Ojude Oba will be grand - State government, sponsors

The Ogun state Ministry of Culture and Tourism has promised to make this year’s edition of the Ojude-Oba festival, scheduled for 28 October, a memorable one.

Miss Busola Ogundele, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Culture and Tourism, made the pledge at a media briefing on the event on Tuesday in Ijebu-Ode.

Pledging government’s financial and moral support, she said the festival had placed the Ijebus and the state as a whole on the international map and that the annual event attract tourists and investors to the state.

“The celebration of Ojude-Oba Festival is known among the Ijebus, the state and the country as a whole as a major festival and rendezvous. It brings the sons and daughters of Ijebuland from within and in the Diaspora to be united to their roots. The festival has, over the years, become a unifying occasion and a tool for social and economic development for the state. It is the mandatory duty of the state Ministry of Culture and Tourism to preserve the cultural heritage of its people.Giving credence to this, the state government has pledged its moral and financial support in organising a successful festival,’’ she said.

Alhaji Sikiru Alatise, the Planning Committee Secretary, said the theme of the festival was: “Ojude Oba races ahead for record breaking performances.’’

He said politics, private carnival, thuggery and robbery would not be allowed during the festival, adding that adequate security would be put in place.

“In today`s Nigeria, anyone putting together a festival of this magnitude will be fool-hardy if appreciable effort is not made in ensuring security and good order. All the security apparatuses of the local government, the town`s security council, the police, the army, State Security Service have been working to ensure better security than we had in the past,’’ he said.

Mr Adeniyi Olukoya, the Head of Marketing, Globacom, said the company would continue to give its support to the festival.

The Ojude-Oba festival, usually slated for the third day of the Eid-El-Kabir, had been celebrated for over 100 years.
