30000 Traffic Offenders Arrested by FRSC in Ogun

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Ogun State Command, said it has arrested over 30,000 traffic offenders in the last eight months.
The Sector Commander, Adegoke Adetunji, disclosed this to journalists on Tuesday in Abeokuta.
He said the offenders were arrested for speeding, overloading, non-usage of seat belts, use of mobile phones while driving, failure to use crash helmets and reckless driving.
“Most of the offenders were sanctioned, prosecuted and were told to pay fines, but as you know, we are not after the fines; FRSC is not set up to generate revenue for the government and it is not a money-making organisation,” Mr. Adetunji said.
“What we are after is to save lives and property on our roads. It is that change in the attitude of the motorists that we are interested in and not the money.”
The sector commander said the command had already began sensitisation and enlightenment programmes in mosques, churches and all the parks and garages in the state on the need to drive safely during the “ember” months.
According to him, the theme for this year’s “ember” month
programme was Road Safety is a Shared Responsibility, It Depends on You.”
“This year we are targeting not only the drivers, but also the passengers. The entire people that use the road are our target for this year. It must be a driver to 14 passengers in a bus,” he said.
“The passengers should not just sit back and allow the driver to take them to hell and they should also not command the driver to speed up because it can contribute to road crashes.
“Road crashes are due to three major factors, human, environmental and weather but the principal cause is the human factor.”
He also urged motorists to observe traffic rules and regulations during the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations to avoid accidents.
