Presidency Is Not Behind My Return To PDP - Daniel

The immediate past governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel has given reasons he is returning to the Peoples Democratic Party next Tuesday amid insinuations that he was mandated to do so.

Speaking to newsmen in his Asoludero Court residence, Sagamu, on Thursday, Daniel debunked the rumour making the rounds that he was under pressure to quit the Labour Party for PDP.

He said that neither the presidency nor any government official mandated him to return to the party that brought him to power as a governor for eight years.

Giving reasons for his imminent return to PDP, Daniel said: “Politics is about choice, when I felt it was okay, we floated the Peoples Party of Nigeria, and later you heard of the Labour Party. No one mandates adults to take decisions.

“Do not also forget that I co-ordinate the presidential campaign in Ogun State and I have a very good relationship with President Goodluck Jonathan. I have always said publicly that I believe he is doing well and should be supported again. If there is anything I need to do to ensure his re-emergence, I have a moral duty to facilitate it.”

Daniel will, publicly, announce his formal return to the PDP on Tuesday, October 7.

Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State and the only serving governor on the platform of the Labour Party had, on Thursday, October 2, 2014, defected to the PDP.

Daniel made the clarification before the commencement of a closed-door meeting of the founding fathers and leaders of PDP in Ogun State, who came to his country home to welcome him back into the party “because of his political relevance as a governor in Ogun State for eight years”.

There have been insinuations in political circles that the Presidency and some influential politicians in and out of government had, consistently, put pressure on him to return to the party as a way of reinforcing the party’s chances of winning the 2015 general elections in the state.

Prince Buruji Kashamu, Chairman, Mobilisation and Organisation, PDP South West zone had, last Sunday, at a reception held for defectors from Labour Party to PDP, stated, categorically, that Daniel had no choice but to return to the party.

Speaking on insinuations that there was no love lost between him and Kashamu, two men, who, individually, wield tremendous influence in Ogun State politics, Daniel said: “Kashamu is our friend and our man.”

“We thank him for his efforts so far. In politics, we have positions and we are hopeful that we are going to work together to rescue the people of Ogun State”, he added.
